Star Formation and Structure Formation at 1 ∼ < Z ∼ < 4

چکیده
The advent of 8m-class telescopes has made galaxies at 1 ∼ < z ∼ < 4 relatively easy to detect and study. This is a brief and incomplete review of some of the recent results to emerge from surveys at these red-shifts. After describing different strategies for finding galaxies at z ∼ > 1, and the differences (and similarities) in the resulting galaxy samples, I summarize what is known about the spatial clustering of star-forming galaxies at z ∼ > 1. Optically selected galaxies are the main focus of this review, but in the final section I discuss the connection between optical and sub-mm samples, and argue that the majority of the 850µm background may have been produced by known optically selected populations at high redshift. Among the new results presented are the dust-corrected luminosity function of Lyman-break galaxies at z ∼ 3, the estimated contribution to the 850µm background from optically selected galaxies at 1 ∼ < z ∼ < 5, revised estimates of the spatial clustering strength of Lyman-break galaxies at z ∼ 3, and an estimate of the clustering strength of star-forming galaxies at z ≃ 1 derived from a new spectroscopic sample of ∼ 800 galaxies with z = 1.0, σ z = 0.1.

The Deep2 Galaxy Redshift Survey: the Role of Galaxy Environment in the Cosmic Star–formation History
Using galaxy samples drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey, we study the relationship between star formation and environment at z ∼ 0.1 and z ∼ 1. We estimate the total star–formation rate (SFR) and specific star–formation rate (sSFR) for each galaxy according to the measured [O II] λ3727Å nebular line luminosity, corrected using empirical calibrations to ...
متن کاملLyman Break Galaxies and the Star Formation Rate of the Universe at z ≈ 6
We determine the space density of UV-luminous star-burst galaxies at z ≈ 6 using deep HST ACS SDSS-i (F775W) and SDSS-z (F850LP) and VLT ISAAC J and Ks band imaging of the Chandra Deep Field South. We find 8 galaxies and one star with (i−z) > 1.5 to a depth of z AB = 25.6 (an 8 σ detection in each of the 3 available ACS epochs). This corresponds to an unobscured star formation rate of ≈ 15 h 70...
متن کاملThe evolution of the star formation rate function and cosmic star formation rate density of galaxies at z ̃ 1-4
We investigate the evolution of the galaxy star formation rate function (SFRF) and cosmic star formation rate density (CSFRD) of z ∼ 1–4 galaxies, using cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations and a compilation of ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR) and Hα observations. These tracers represent different populations of galaxies with the IR light being a probe of objects with hi...
متن کاملThe structures of distant galaxies – II. Diverse galaxy structures and local environments at z= 4–6; implications for early galaxy assembly
We present an analysis of the structures, sizes, star formation rates and local environmental properties of galaxies at z ∼ 4–6 (τ universe < 2 Gyr), utilizing deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The galaxies we study are selected with the Lymanbreak drop-out technique, using galaxies which are B-, Vand i-drops, which effectively selects ultraviolet (UV) bright s...

متن کاملGalaxy Evolution : Internally or Externally Driven ?
1 RESUMEN El resumen será traducido al español por los editores. The globally-averaged star formation rate in the Universe has been steadily declining since at least z ∼ 1. This may be due either to very local processes operating within the average galaxy, or to external, environmental effects. Specifically, the build-up of structure may be responsible for terminating star formation in some gal...
